Jessie first appears in the 1870 census at the age of six in the household of William and Sarah Falconbury in Casey County in Jenkins Precinct. I have not found him in the 1880 records and the 1890 records have been destroyed. In 1900, however, he reappears at the age of 36 with his wife, Martha Hart, and his children Arthur (14), Effie (11), Cora (10), Della (6) and Herbert (3). He was farming for a living and lived in the area of Middleburg and Yosemite, Casey County.

By 1910 he is living in the Waynesburg area of Lincoln County with Martha and their children Arthur, Della, Herbert and Eugene (7). According to the information found on this census, Martha was the mother of seven children, four of whom were still alive. Apparently, Effie and Cora died sometime between 1900 and 1910 and one other child was born who died, too. In 1920 Jessie and Martha are still near Waynesburg along with Herbert, Eugene and Stanley (9) and ten years later, still in the same area, Jessie (65) and Martha (61) have Herbert (31), Stanley (19) and Herbert's wife wife Vida (19).
