It is interesting to note that there are three separate men in the Falconbury line with the name "William Riley
Falconbury"; in fact, two of them were born just one month apart. This has caused some confusion for people who
are researching the family tree. Hopefully, the following explanation will help clear up the questions about who
these men were and what their relationship was to each other and to the family in general. Throughout this web
site the men will be consistently referred to as William Riley Falconbury, William Riley Falconbury, Senior, and
William Riley Falconbury, Junior:
- William Riley Falconbury, was born on August 16, 1834, in Greensburg,
Indiana. He was the sixth child of Benjamin Franklin Falconbury and Polly Wheeldon and the grandson of Jacob
Falconbury, Senior and Charity. Around 1850, he married Rebecca Lewis with whom he had seven children: Ellen
K. (1857), Mary E. (1858), Anna B. (1861), Lornetta L. (1863), Charles (1866), Nathan Benjamin (1867) and
Nettie B. (1868). Rebecca died in 1870 at the age of 37 and William remained single until January 6,
1881 when he married Hannah (last name unknown). There were no children from that union. Hannah died on
May 9, 1908. William appears in the 1840 census of Decatur County, Indiana and in the 1860 census in Clinton
County, Indiana. He died on December 2, 1917 in Indiana.
- William Riley Falconbury, Senior, was born in July, 1834, in Casey
County, Kentucky, just one month prior to William Riley's birth in Indiana. He was the second and last child
of Jacob Falconbury, Junior, and his first wife, Ann Carman, the grandson of William and Mary (Wall) Falconbury
and the great grandson of Jacob Falconbury, Senior, and Charity. This would make him a first cousin once
removed from the Indiana William Riley. William Senior married Sarah Sally Barnett sometime in 1852 and had
eleven children: Nancy (1854), Ann (1856), Sarah Catherine (1858), Manerva Jane (1861), John M. (1862), Jessie
(1864), Mary Ellen (1866), Martha (1868), William Riley, Jr. (1870), Juritha (?) and Isham Edmond (1874).
William Senior appears in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census in Casey County. I have not located him in the 1880
Casey County census and the 1890 census records no longer exist. He is last found in the 1900 census in Casey
County, Kentucky, aged 65, with his wife Sarah, aged 64. In that census, one of his neighbors is Rodham
Luttrell, his wife Florinda (Falconbury) Luttrell and her twin sister Dorinda who, I believe, were William's
first cousins (more about Dorinda and Florinda). His other neighbor is his son, Isham Edmond, and his family.
It is not known when William Senior died but it was probably sometime before 1910 in Casey County.
- William Riley Falconbury, Junior,
(Picture) was born in August, 1870, in Casey County,
Kentucky. He was the son of William Riley, Senior, and Sarah Sally Barnett. This would make Indiana's
William Riley and William Riley, Junior, first cousins twice removed. Riley, which is how he was better known,
married Parthenia Bastin on December 12, 1890 and had three children: Lowlie (1891), Naomi (1898) and William
Everett (1903) (my paternal grandfather). Parthenia disappears after 1903; nothing is known about what
happened to her. About 1908, Riley married Linda E. Gastineau, "Lindie", and they had four children: Johnnie
(1908), Roy (1912), Lora (1918) and Thomas Jefferson (1925). Riley died on January 21, 1941 and is buried in
the Falconberry Cemetery near Waynesburg, Kentucky.
William Junior appears in the 1900, 1910 and 1930 census of Casey County, Kentucky.
Perhaps this will provide a clearer picture of these three men and where they stand in the lineage of our family. If
you have additional information on any of these men that you can share , please send me an e-mail or drop me a note.
